Weekends, Holidays, & Inclement Winter Weather

Weekends (Saturdays and Sundays) increase rates by $5. State holidays and inclement winter weather each increase rates by $10.

Which holidays?

We use Oregon.gov to determine the following official state holidays:

New Year’s Day – January 1
Martin Luther King Jr. Day – third Monday of January
President’s Day – third Monday of February
Memorial Day – last Monday of May
Juneteenth – June 19
Independence Day – July 4
Labor Day – first Monday of September
Veteran’s Day – November 11 (if weekend, Friday or Monday)
Thanksgiving Day – fourth Thursday of November
Day after Thanksgiving
Christmas Day – December 25

What constitutes inclement winter weather?

We define inclement winter weather as days when transportation is so dangerously hindered by snow/ice that we can only get to your home by foot. This is rare. Under these circumstances, most clients end up cancelling service due to their own work cancellations and travel limitations.

We use any of the following public alerts to define cases of inclement winter weather:

State of Emergency from the mayor and/or Multnomah County
Winter weather advisory or storm warning from the National Weather Service
Winter weather travel advisory or road closures from Portland Bureau of Transportation
Winter weather transit delays or cancellations from TriMet

Why charge extra on these days?

We strive to always be available for our clients. We work weekends, holidays, and during the worst weather. When most pet care businesses close for Christmas or cancel because of a snow storm, we stay open. We have never neglected a pet we were scheduled to visit, especially when clients have left town and relied solely on us. We take this commitment seriously. However, this means we rarely get days off, often cancelling personal plans to be available for service and sometimes spending long days trudging through snow and ice. To help compensate for this, state holidays and inclement winter weather each increase rates by $10, and weekends (Saturdays and Sundays) increase rates by $5.
