What constitutes severe winter weather?

We define severe winter weather as days when transportation is so dangerously hindered by snow/ice that we can only get to your home by foot. This is rare. Under these circumstances, most clients end up cancelling service due to their own work cancellations and travel limitations.

We use the following public alerts to define cases of severe winter weather:

Winter weather advisory or storm warning from the National Weather Service
Winter weather travel advisory or road closures from Portland Bureau of Transportation
Winter weather transit cancellations from TriMet

Why charge extra on these days?

We strive to always be available for our clients. We work weekends, holidays, and during the worst weather. When most pet care businesses close for Christmas or cancel because of a snow storm, we stay open. We have never neglected a pet we were scheduled to visit, especially when clients have left town and relied solely on us. We take this commitment seriously. However, this means we rarely get days off and sometimes have to spend long days trudging through snow and ice. To help compensate for this, state holidays and severe winter weather each increase rates by $10.
